I actually wrote a similar post yesterday that touches upon the value of raw talent vs industry experience. Your post reminds me of the old proverb of giving a man a fish versus teaching him how to fish. Using that analogy, a salesman with a strong rolodex has plenty of fish. However, that supply of fish dwindles daily as "favors" are called in and as contacts switch jobs. Knowing how to fish is far more important so that the supply of fish gets replenished constantly.
